Not necessarily, but it’s worth taking seriously. A single roach may have wandered in, especially the large ones that normally live outdoors. The small ones are a different story: German cockroaches live and breed indoors, so finding one usually means others are nearby. Seeing a small roach, or seeing any roach during the day, is the sign to act on.

They don’t bite, but they’re not harmless. Roaches travel through drains and garbage and then across counters and dishes, spreading bacteria as they go. Their droppings and shed skins also trigger allergies and asthma, and children are the most affected. That’s the real reason not to wait them out.

Because treatment drives them out of hiding before it finishes them off. The first week or two often brings more sightings, not fewer, and many of the roaches you see are already dying. Egg cases are the other reason, since they’re protected and hatch later, which is why one visit rarely ends it. What matters is the trend: fewer each week means it’s working.

The same way they get into any house. Roaches are looking for warmth and water, not a mess, and a spotless kitchen offers both. Cleanliness affects how well they do once they’re in, not whether they arrive. In apartments and townhomes especially, a neighbor’s problem can become yours without anything you did.

Store-bought sprays kill the ones you see and scatter the rest, which often spreads a problem into more rooms than it started in. Baits work better, but placement is most of the job, and roaches breed fast enough that a partial treatment just resets the clock. If you’re seeing them regularly, this is one to hand off.

Fix the drips, keep food sealed, empty the trash often, and clear out cardboard where you can. None of that gets rid of roaches on its own, but it takes away the food and water they’re living on, which makes treatment work faster and hold longer.
